One of the sad things about the approach of winter is that we can’t enjoy our outdoor herb gardens. For those of us who use herbs in various herbal remedies and for cooking purposes, we’ve already started drying or freezing some of those herbs. But Rachel shares 5 herbs that thrive indoors during the winter. The advantage, of course, is that you have the vivid taste of fresh herbs!

She first explains how she repots her selected herbs and the suggested lighting requirements. Ideally, you need a south-facing window for best results. I did wonder if you could use a grow light to provide the necessary light on cloudy days. I haven’t tried this, but it might be worth a shot.

Rachel then discusses her top 5 indoor winter herbs in depth.

For each herb, she details:

  • Amount of sun needed
  • Temperature
  • Soil
  • Watering Requirements
  • When to Harvest

These are the herbs in her Top 5 list of indoor herbs.

  • Chives
  • Oregano
  • Rosemary
  • Thyme
  • Parsley

Here’s one herb that I’d add to Rachel’s list. Basil is one of my favorite herbs for cooking. In the past,  I’ve had great success growing basil from seed in a west-facing window during the winter.
