There are many health concerns related to the use of antiperspirant deodorant formulas because of the aluminum base and parabens, which are chemicals used as preservatives. Aluminum compounds , especially aluminum chlorohydrate, are easily absorbed through the skin and have been linked to higher risks of Alzheimer’s. (This is based on one reported trial completed to date). There are other ingredients in commercial antiperspirant deodorants that cause concern. But natural deodorants are often not effective in controlling both odor and sweating, especially with men.
Andrea at FrugallySustainable developed a natural deodorant for men. It has been tested and performed well in odor and wetness control.
There’s a complete recipe with recommendations for essential oils that men would prefer. These include
- Vetiver, Black Pepper, and Bergamot
- Bay, Coriander, Black Pepper, Ginger, and Nutmeg
- Patchouli, Clary Sage, and Cedarwood
- Bay, Cedarwood, Coriander, Eucalypus, and Juniper
Andrea also includes a probiotic in the recipe and she gives some specific recommendations on probiotics that work best.
