My family and I live in the Midwest. We’re used to freezing weather and snow in the winter. At the end of this week our high temperature during the day will be in the 20’s with 10 to 20 mph winds and gusts up to 30 mph. That means sub-zero wind chill temperatures where your eyes tear up and everything in your nose freezes. In fact your entire body freezes. But the magic elixir to defeat winter’s icy grip is HOT CHOCOLATE!

I was raised on Italian hot chocolate and that’s what I make in the winter. It’s a thick hot chocolate that is more like hot pudding. (The secret to the thickness is cornstarch). In Italy their hot chocolate is so thick they serve it with a spoon. My version uses whole milk and cream and chopped dark chocolate, and is topped with whipped cream. One of the recipes in this article is Elena’s Italian hot chocolate. It looks really good, nice and thick, and is much healthier than mine.
