Sweet tea is often thought of as a Southern drink. Traditional sweet tea uses black tea, sugar, and hot water. It’s then cooled and served with ice.
I found mention of a recipe for sweet tea in a community cookbook published in 1879. The cookbook was called called Housekeeping in Old Virginia by Marion Cabell Tyree. Marion was a former Texan. Marion’s recipe used green tea which was a common ingredient in sweet tea until WWII. During the war, green tea was unavailable in the US and Americans got used to drinking black tea.
I like this sweet tea variation by Emma of a Beautiful Mess because it adds honey and oranges to the mix. It’s also a very simple recipe. Enjoy this drink any time of the year. It’s especially refreshing during warmer weather.
