This is an interesting and important tutorial by Betsy of DIY Natural in which she shares how to make reusable food wrap.
There are a number of reasons to replace plastic wrap.
- These food wraps can be washed and reused often, so they’re less wasteful
- It’s healthier to wrap your food with this fabric wrap, than using plastic
- You’ll save money by using reusable food wraps and not buying commercial wraps.
In this tutorial Betsy explains how to make cotton fabric squares water-proof and suitable for wrapping food that might leak.
It’s an interesting and creative idea. Check it out.
Note: One of the health concerns about plastic wrap is the fact that they may contain chemicals that are hormone disrupters. Some plastic wraps contain LDPE which contains DEHA, an endocrine disruptor linked to breast cancer in women and low sperm counts in men.
The Consumers Union tested pre-wrapped cheese. Out of 19 pieces of cheese tested, 7 that were wrapped in the PVC cling wrap used by supermarkets contained consistently high levels of DEHA. There’s also the concern that if you use a plastic wrap (especially with fatty foods) and the container is heated in a microwave, the DEHA can leach into the food.
The takeaway for me is if I microwave anything it’s in a glass dish covered by a paper towel. The other thing I wondered about was whether taking plastic wrapped food to a picnic on a hot day would also result in leaching. I couldn’t find any research that addressed this.
