The immune system is a finely tuned system of organs, immune cells and substances that protect your body from infections. The spleen, thymus gland, bone marrow, lymph nodes and white blood cells are key players in the immune system. Viruses, bacteria and other microorganisms attempt to infect the body by entering through cuts, fluids, and other means. The immune system detects a germs and attempts to block their entry into the body. If germs succeed in entering the body, the immune system isolates them and kills them.
It’s really a neat protective defense system. But there are things you can do that actually hurt your immune system. If you eat too much sugar, it can reduce the ability of white blood cells to kill bacteria for several hours. Excess weight can also interfere with the immune system’s ability to fight infection. And (no surprise here) long-term stress can weaken your immune system. How many times have you dealt with a stressful situation, only to become ill afterwards? It’s because your immune system couldn’t fight off the cause of your illness.
In this article, Saufiya shares 10 remedies, the majority of which are herbs, that provide a boost to immune systems. This is a good overview on this subject. It left me wanting more specific details though. For example, Echinacea does have anti-inflammatory properties. It’s been used for ages to treat wounds and infections. But this is how it evidently works: The herb actually stimulates white blood cells and lymphocytes to attack any invading microorganisms. White blood cells and spleen cells increase in the presence of echinacea. This increases the amount of immune cells that can deal with the invaders. As a result, the immune system is strengthened.
