Psoriasis
There are 5 different types of psoriasis. However, the most common type is plaque psoriasis. Plaque psoriasis presents as raised, red, scaly patches that have a gray-white build-up of dead skin cells. It’s an autoimmune disease that can appear on any part of the body. One of the main symptoms is itchiness.
This article by Janice discusses 20 different home remedies that can relieve the symptoms of psoriasis.
Capsaicin Cream
One of the more interesting remedies is treating psoriasis with capsaicin ointment. Capsaicin is the component that makes hot peppers hot. It’s found in many over-the counter pain ointments. It works by blocking a compound in the body that transmits pain and other nerve impulses. So this effectively reduces pain and other stimuli.
It seems counter-intuitive to use a capsaicin ointment on inflamed, itchy skin. However, this article cites a 1986 double-blind study that shows improvement in the presentation and symptoms in patients with psoriasis. The initial application of capsaicin cream did cause pain, itching, stinging and redness, but this reaction reduced or disappeared with continued application. Janice provides links to commercial and homemade capsaicin creams.
As she notes, if you have psoriasis and plan to use any of the remedies detailed in this article, please consult your doctor first.
